Hey folks,

This Sunday afternoon, January 22nd, at 3:30 pm we will be meeting at the Firehouse Shelter to serve our regular lasagna meal. We will leave from the DF building at 3:10. If you would like to sign up to bring something, please sign up in the comments below. You can leave your food contribution in our kitchen clearly marked for the Firehouse (be sure to put warm food in the food warmers to the left of the sink), or you can bring it directly to the shelter by 3:30. Thanks!

Our menu includes lasagna, corn and green beans, salad, rolls, and desert–enough to serve 100 hungry men.

  • Lasagna – we need about 10 pans that can serve 10-12 people.
  • Vegetables – we need 2-3 pans of corn and 2-3 pans of green beans for 25 people (one large can from Sam’s or 8 normal sized cans).
  • Salad – Enough for 100 people, including a large bottle of salad dressing. This usually runs around $30 or less.
  • Rolls – 100.
  • Dessert – we need 10 dozen cookies, brownies, cupcakes, etc.

All items need to either be at DF, in disposable containers, by 3:00pm Sunday afternoon or at the Firehouse Shelter by 3:30. We leave DF at 3:10 and meet at the Shelter at 3:30 in order to start serving plates by 4pm.

In an effort to have some idea of what is covered, please let us know how you plan to help by leaving a comment below.

This is a great opportunity to participate with our community to serve Christ among the least of these here in B’ham. Thanks for your help!

Hey gang,

With school back in swing, we’re resuming our serving lunch at the Firehouse Shelter on Sunday August 28th. We will continue this rhythm of service every 4th Sunday, so the dates for 2011 will be:
  • August 28th
  • September 25th
  • October 23rd
  • November 27th (Sunday after Thanksgiving)
  • December 25th (this is Christmas Day–will check to see if there’s a meal already scheduled to be served…)
I have several questions to bounce of anyone who has ideas…
  • What are your thoughts about our typical lasagna menu? Should we keep that up, or consider some different ideas? What kind of lunch does the typical Firehouse crowd get excited about?
  • Is there a way that we could prepare a meal that would involve our children and youth more?
  • What are other ways that we could engage with the men at the shelter on a deeper level?
  • Other thoughts and ideas?
I’ll send out a reminder email the Monday before our 4th Sunday… We will again be using this blog for sign ups.
peace

Honduras 2011: Day 1

June 8, 2011

By Stephanie Brown Turpin

Today was our first work day in Honduras. Majority of our group went to build a house with David Koski. Rachel ended up at another house site where, so I am told, she dominated the roof…as usual! :-) Us old folks loved watching the newbies get the hang of house building Honduran style. Hudson, Joseph, and Tyler helped get the house started by measuring and digging holes. (Yes, Pam, Hudson actually worked! ;-) we have pictures) Lane, Erin, Will, and Debra learned how to build the wall. They caught on quick and did a great job. Davi also helped with the house by moving wood and hammering, among other things. Erin Jackson experienced using a chainsaw for the first time. She takes after her mother! ;-)  Erin, Jenna, Bailey, Lane, Will, and Joseph had a blast playing with the kids. It was awesome watching them entertain a group of Honduran children. Erin, Joseph, Hudson, Lane, Jenna and Will got into a major chase and tickle game with the kids. It was hilarious! Bailey made bracelets with a group of girls. All in all, it was a great first day and another family now has a home. Pictures coming soon!!

If you would like to host a Gospel’n'Grub (usually the 3rd Sunday evening of the month, usually from 6 – 8:30 pm), sign up with your selected date in the comments below. It involves hosting and feeding 20-25+ hungry teens, and working with me to coordinate a time of worship and someone to share a message. We usually Grub first, and Gospel second, but nothing is set in stone.
